Unit 01 // Session D // Extra practice

Near-ten facts

What you need: About 20 small identical things: dried beans, nickels, buttons, or pasta. No objects? Draw dots and move them with your pencil.

Use one of two routes: make ten (faire dix), or use a double you know. The route should make the fact feel smaller.

Date:

1

Get to ten first.

Say each partner out loud. These are the small moves that unlock the harder facts.

9 + 1 = 10
8 + 2 = 10
7 + 3 = 10
6 + 4 = 10
2

Build the three anchor facts.

For the first two, split the second number and make ten. For the last one, use the double.

9 + 7 = 9 + 1 + 6so10 + 6 = 16
8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3so10 + 3 = 13
8 + 8 = double 8so8 + 8 = 16
Point to the ten before saying the answer: ten and six is sixteen; ten and three is thirteen. For 8 + 8, say: double eight is sixteen.
3

Choose the route, then solve.

Circle Double or Make ten before writing the answer.

9 + 7 =16Double / Make ten
8 + 5 =13Double / Make ten
8 + 8 =16Double / Make ten
7 + 8 =15Double / Make ten
9 + 6 =15Double / Make ten
7 + 7 =14Double / Make ten

Answer check: Make ten works well for 9 + 7, 8 + 5, and 9 + 6. A known double works well for 8 + 8 and 7 + 7. For 7 + 8, double 7 and add 1.

4

First recall.

Use counters or fingers if they help. Before counting on, ask: can I see a ten or a double?

8 + 5 = 13
8 + 8 = 16
9 + 7 = 16
9 + 4 = 13
8 + 7 = 15
6 + 6 = 12
5

Cover the page above. Take one calm breath. Try the three facts again.

This second look helps the facts stick. There is no timer.

9 + 7 = 16
8 + 8 = 16
8 + 5 = 13
6

Explain one fact out loud.

Choose one: 9 + 7, 8 + 5, or 8 + 8. Finish the sentence.

I know = because .

Move on when

The student answers 9 + 7, 8 + 5, and 8 + 8 correctly in both practice rounds, and can name the route used for each one. Accuracy and explanation matter more than speed.

For the parent

If Donia gets stuck, give only the next question: What does 9 need to make ten? or Which double do you already know? Let her use fingers or counters. Ask her to show the ten or the double instead of asking her to stop using a helpful tool.

Repeat only question 5 on another day. Three remembered facts are more useful than a long page finished while tired.
