Doubles and near doubles

A double is the fastest fact there is. Learn the doubles, then use them for their neighbours. Le double.

One more than a double.

The bottom row has one extra dot. Start from the double you already know, then add one.

One less than a double.

Take the double of the bigger number, then take one away.

Double8 + 8=16so8 + 7 =15
Double6 + 6=12so6 + 5 =11
Double10 + 10=20so10 + 9 =19
8 + 7 appeared twice. One more than 7 + 7, and one less than 8 + 8. Both routes give 15. Either one is correct, so let her use whichever double she knows best.

Your turn. Write the double you used.

Say the double out loud first, then the answer. Two words before the number.

Move on when

She names the double before she answers, without being asked. "Seven and seven is fourteen, so seven and eight is fifteen." A pause while she finds the double is fine. Counting up one by one means repeat this session.

For the parent

Near doubles are the shortest route for any pair one apart: 6 + 7, 7 + 8, 8 + 9. Reach for this before making ten, because it holds only one fact in the head instead of three. Session D covers the pairs that are further apart.
