Cross the ten

When the answer goes past ten, make the ten first. Then say it as ten and something. Dix et cinq.

Ten and something.

Start here every time. Say the words out loud: ten and five is fifteen.

10 + 5 =15
10 + 3 =13
10 + 8 =18
10 + 1 =11
10 + 7 =17
10 + 4 =14
Every teen number is a full ten and some ones. Fifteen is ten and five. If this box is slow, stop here and practise only this until it is quick. Nothing below will work without it.

Fill the frame first.

The pale dots move across to fill the first frame. Now the ten is there, on the paper, where you can see it.

Split the second number.

How many does the first number need to reach ten? Take that much, and see what is left over.

8 + 7 = 8 +2+5so10and5=15
9 + 5 = 9 +1+4so10and4=14

7 + 5 = 7 +3+2so10and2=12
9 + 7 = 9 +1+6so10and6=16

Whisper the ten, then say the total. The ten never disappears.

Numbers one apart: use a double. One number is 8 or 9 and the other is small: make the ten.

Move on when

She says the total, not the leftover. "Ten and five, fifteen." If she answers a bridging question with the small number alone, the ten is still being dropped, so go back to question 1.

For the parent

Ask the last question so the ten comes last, never the leftover. Not "and what is left from the seven?" but "the frame is full, so that is a ten, and how many are outside?" Then have her say the whole thing herself: ten and five, fifteen.

Keep the counters on the table until she stops needing them. A child who has to remember the ten will drop it. A child who can see the ten will not.
